Checklists in Aviation: The Unsung Heroes of Flight Safety

What is a Checklist in Aviation?

A checklist is a written or digital document containing step-by-step procedures that pilots must perform before, during, and after a flight. These lists are created based on the aircraft’s operating manual and are tailored for normal, abnormal, and emergency situations.

Why Are Checklists Important?

  • Standardization: Ensures every crew follows the same procedures

  • ⚠️ Error Reduction: Minimizes risks caused by forgetfulness or distraction

  • 🛬 Safety Assurance: Helps verify aircraft systems are configured correctly

  • 📚 Regulatory Compliance: Required by aviation authorities like FAA, EASA, DGCA, etc.

Types of Checklists in Aviation

1. Normal Checklists

Used during routine phases of flight:

  • Pre-flight

  • Engine start

  • Taxi

  • Takeoff

  • Climb, cruise, descent

  • Landing

  • Shutdown

2. Abnormal Checklists

Used when a system doesn't operate as expected, but it’s not a full emergency.
Example: Cabin pressurization loss or electrical faults.

3. Emergency Checklists

Used during life-threatening scenarios.
Example: Engine fire, smoke in the cockpit, or stall recovery.

4. Memory Items

Critical emergency actions that must be performed immediately without referring to a written checklist. These are later backed up with the physical checklist.

Who Uses the Checklists?

  • Pilot Flying (PF): Usually performs the actions

  • Pilot Monitoring (PM): Reads the checklist and confirms each step is completed

  • Cabin Crew: Also use checklists for door arming/disarming, safety demo, and emergency equipment checks

In single-pilot operations (like in general aviation), the pilot self-verifies each step.
