How many Pilots are needed to Fly a Boeing 777?
The Boeing 777 is a big wide-body jet airliner capable of carrying up to 388 passengers and flying over 9,000 miles. It is one of the world's most popular and technologically advanced aircraft, and many airlines utilize it for long-haul flights. The answer to your inquiry is that flying the 777 requires at least two pilots. On longer flights, three or four pilots are on board to ensure that everyone gets enough relaxation and sleep. According to the Federal Aviation Authority, at least two pilots must be present in the cockpit at all times during the flight.
The 777 is flown by two pilots: the captain and first officer. The captain is the aircraft's commander and is ultimately responsible for its safety and functioning. The first officer is the co-pilot, who aids the captain and shares the responsibility for flying the plane, monitoring flight data, making critical piloting choices, and communicating with air traffic controllers.
The additional pilots who join the crew on longer flights are known as relief pilots or first/second officers. They alternate tasks with the captain during flight, allowing them to take breaks and sleep in a dedicated rest space behind the cockpit. Relief pilots have the same credentials and training as regular pilots, however they typically have less experience and seniority.
The number of pilots required for a flight varies depending on the length of the flight and the laws of each airline and country. If the flight lasts more than eight hours, a third pilot is necessary onboard. If the flight lasts longer than 12 hours, a fourth pilot is necessary. Some airlines may have slightly varying restrictions based on their policies and practices.
